Engaging health workers to communicate on female genital mutilation (FGM) is a useful and effective tactic to prevent this harmful practice, according to a recently published study. FGM, which includes any injury to female genitals for non-medical reasons, has serious health risks for women and girls, and is internationally recognized as a violation of human rights. While the health system can play a key role in stopping the practice, in some settings so-called “FGM medicalization” – when it is performed by health workers – is on the rise.

Indonesia melalui Peraturan Pemerintah (PP) Nomor 28 Tahun 2024 tentang Pelaksanaan Undang Undang Nomor 17 Tahun 2023 resmi menghapus praktik sunat pada perempuan. Ketentuan tersebut jelas tercantum dalam pasal 102 poin a sebagai salah satu upaya kesehatan reproduksi bayi, balita, dan anak prasekolah.
"Menghapus praktik sunat perempuan," demikian bunyi regulasi dalam PP yang diteken Presiden Joko Widodo, Jumat (27/4/2024).
Portal Kesehatan Masyarakat (Portkesmas) yang didukung Unicef telah menginisiasi pelatihan kolaboratif yang dinamai Jaga Bersama sebagai upaya untuk mengampanyekan pentingnya imunisasi Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) untuk mencegah kanker serviks. Pelatihan ini berlangsung selama lima hari sejak 15-19 Juli 2024 untuk membekali tenaga kesehatan, guru, Lembaga Swadaya Masyarakat (LSM), dan anak muda dengan keterampilan komunikasi untuk menyampaikan pentingnya imunisasi HPV dan perilaku hidup sehat lainnya.
